Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Glendora Public Library. Volunteers are a vital part of our Library. We have a variety of positions for a (variety) of ages and skills. The needs of the Library vary from time to time.

PLEASE NOTE: The Glendora Public Library does not accommodate court/attorney appointed community services hours.

Printed applications are available at the check-out desk or in the Friends Book Loft at the Library. Applications can be submitted to the Library counter. 

When we receive your application, you will be contacted by the Volunteer Coordinator to discuss your selected area of interest.  If there is a need in that area, then an interview will be scheduled.

Adult Literacy Tutor

• Description: Adult Literacy volunteers help an adult learn to read or read at a higher level. All volunteers are required to attend a tutor training before being assigned to a leaner. The Literacy Coordinator provides the tutoring materials you needed. Tutoring pairs meet in the Glendora Public Library at either literacy study carrels or in a library study room (if available).
• Commitment: 1.5 to 2 hours of tutoring per week, as well as planning time, for a minimum of six months.
• Ideal for: Adults who want to pass on their love of reading to another adult, and help change a life.
• Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age, no maximum age. Must be able to speak, read, and write English.
• Skills: Patience, dependability, compassion, flexibility, planning. No previous teaching experience is required.

 Library Programs

• Description: The Library participates in and hosts a variety of community programs and culture events throughout the year at the Glendora Public Library.
• Commitment: Varies depending on the program. A minimum of six months. One to two hours depending on the program.
• Ideal for: Adults who enjoy interacting with the public.
• Skills: Organization, planning and hosting.

 Shelving & Book Care

• Description: Volunteers will assist library staff by shelving returned books and maintaining the order and tidiness on the books on the shelves.
• Commitment: A minimum of two hours per week for at least three months.
• Ideal for: Anyone 14 years or older who likes organization.
• Skills: Need to able to stand, reach and push a cart full of books.

Youth Services

• Description: Assist with children and teen activities during the year which include Storytimes, Special Programs and Events and may help shelve library materials. Volunteers assigned to the Children’s Room are required to be fingerprinted and have a background check. This will be arranged for you at no cost.
• Commitment: Varies depending your schedule. A minimum of six months. One to two hours per week.
• Ideal for: Adults (18 or older) who enjoy interacting with infants, children, teens and young adults.
• Skills: Reliable, personable, friendly, have good balance, coordination and enjoy working with young children.

Children’s Room

• Description: Assist staff with maintenance and overall appearance of the Children’s Room.
• Commitment: Varies depending your schedule. A minimum of six months. One to two hours per week.
• Ideal for: Anyone 12 to 18 years who enjoys interacting with infants, children, teens and young adults.
• Skills: Must be 12 years old; reliable, personable and friendly and have a love of reading and books. Needs to have the ability to follow directions.

Discovery Challenge Youth Volunteer

• Description: There is a separate application process for the Summer Discovery Challenge Youth Volunteer. Applications are available in early April of each year. Will assist children and their families in recording their hours read during the Summer Discovery Challenge, shelve, and assist library staff with various duties throughout the summer.
• Commitment: June and July only. Two months. One to two hours per week.
• Ideal for: Youth ages 12 to 18 years who enjoy interacting with infants, children. (Must be 12 prior to the beginning of Summer Discovery Challenge).
• Skills: Ability to follow directions and assist with a variety of jobs. Reliable, personable, friendly and have a love of books and reading.

 Computer Assistance

• Description: Share your expertise assisting the public with computer related questions and problem solving. The computers are located on the main floor of the Glendora Public Library near the Information Desk.
• Commitment: A two hour shift, one day a week, for a minimum of three months.
• Ideal for: Anyone in high school or college who has knowledge of computers and is comfortable assisting adults, teens and children.
• Skills: Problem solving knowledge of computers; the ability to assist customers while maintaining a patient, positive attitude. Familiarity with basic computer programs and functions (Microsoft Office, email, document transfer) is helpful.
